Juno Award Nominee Kirk Diamond has teamed up with legendary reggae icon Derrick Morgan on “Conqueror”. The lead single from Kirk’s upcoming 2016 untitled EP.
Kirk who is well known for his penchant for old school dancehall and reggae, has candidly admitted to being influenced by the likes of Supercat and Jacob Miller and has tried to keep the essence in his various singles. Working on a project with a reggae legend is the culmination of a musical dream.
Speaking on the song, Kirk explained,”The duet was an honor for me to do. A lot of people my age or younger may not know who Derrick Morgan is or even be familiar with his music so this was a way for me to at least reintroduce him to my supporters. It’s an original song for those who may not know his 1967 version. I used parts of his verses as a chorus while I wrote and sang my verses.”
He further added, “The song is about conquering the fears of fighting for what you want. Knowing it won’t be easy to achieve your goals but still be willing to fight and conquering while remaining true to yourself.”
Making his mark in Jamaican popular music, Derrick Morgan has worked with some of the biggest names in reggae music such as Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley, and Jimmy Cliff among others. The reggae crooner known for such classic, “Tougher Than Tough”, “Do the Beng Beng”, “Conquering Ruler”, became the only artist in the 60’s to ever to fill the places from one to seven on the Jamaican pop chart simultaneously.
Retiring for the limelight because of health reasons, Derrick Morgan musical legacy continues on for newer generations through remixes such as “Conqueror”, and “Tougher Than Tough” who was featured in the video game Scarface: The World is Yours.
